Trecarney is a workshop and artist’s studio project within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site and the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The proposal replaces an existing workshop with a building designed to support practical work and creative activity while responding sensitively to its rural setting.
The new building accommodates a workshop on the ground floor and an artist’s studio on the first floor, creating dedicated spaces for different activities within a single structure. Its architectural character draws on the local agricultural vernacular, helping the building sit comfortably within its surroundings. A large glazed gable window provides a striking focal point, framing views across the landscape and bringing the setting into the artist’s workspace.
Projects in designated heritage and landscape areas require careful consideration of design, materials and visual impact. At Trecarney, the use of familiar rural forms is balanced with a contemporary approach to light and the relationship between the interior and its surroundings.
Tamar Architecture specialises in sensitive rural architecture, building replacement projects and heritage-led design across Cornwall and Devon. Trecarney demonstrates how a functional outbuilding can also make a considered architectural contribution to its setting. By combining practical workshop accommodation with a light-filled creative space, the project responds to the needs of its users while respecting the distinctive character of the Tamar Valley landscape.
