SLIMEFORD BARN | Traditional granite barn conversion

Slimeford Barn is a sensitive conversion of a traditional granite stone barn within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site and the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Located within the former grounds of a Grade II listed property, the project called for an architectural approach that respected the historic building and its sensitive landscape setting.

The design transforms the existing agricultural structure into residential accommodation while retaining the qualities of the original barn. An open-plan ground floor creates a welcoming living environment, with views extending into the garden and a stronger connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape. Upstairs, two generous bedrooms make the most of the impressive views available from the property.

Barn conversions in historic and rural settings require careful consideration of the original building, its materials and its wider context. Slimeford Barn demonstrates how adaptive reuse can give a traditional structure a new purpose without losing the character that makes it distinctive.

Tamar Architecture specialises in barn conversions, heritage architecture and sensitive residential design across Cornwall and Devon. This project reflects the practice’s commitment to conserving existing buildings and creating homes that respond to their setting. By combining historic character with contemporary living arrangements, Slimeford Barn illustrates the potential of thoughtful rural architecture to bring new life to traditional buildings.
